Why it exists
Large language models have changed how people find literature. The results usually read well and most references are real. However, some have a plausible author, a convincing title and a journal that exists, but point to a paper that was never written. Supervisors see them in theses. Editors and librarians see them in submitted manuscripts and reader enquiries. Researchers find them in their own drafts, sometimes just before a deadline.
Checking for them means going through bibliographies by hand, entry by entry, across catalogues and databases that no single search covers. Conversations with colleagues, librarians and clients kept ending at the same place:
Nobody wanted an AI to guess whether a citation was fake. They wanted to know whether it could be found, and where.
Veracite answers that question. It looks each reference up in scholarly and library databases and reports what it found, with the evidence attached. It does not score writing style or judge whether a text was machine-generated. It checks whether the cited work exists and whether its details match — and shows where it looked, so the result holds up when someone else asks.
